I'm a beginner, how do I start?

 

If you have a couple maple trees you are half way there.  All you need are a few basic supplies. 

- Spiles

- A bucket to collect sap and/or sap sack holder and sack

- How are you going to boil your sap

- Come see us to ask lots of questions. We've been there and we can help get you started.

Can I boil on my stove at home?

Though we don't recommend this as when you boil, sap will produce lots of steam and you could ruin your drywall.  Boiling is best kept to the outdoors or by building a sugar shack.

Which methods of payments can I use?

 

We accept cash, check and/or credit card. Please note that when using a credit card a 3% surcharge will be added to your total.

Why use an RO?

 

By using a Reverse Osmosis, once can eliminate up to 50% of the water in the sap before boiling; creating less boiling time and turning more sap into syrup and increasing your production.

When do I tap my trees?

 

When taping your your trees, you will want to keep an eye on the weather. Many hobbyist start in January. However, maple syrup season could start as early as January to March, depends on Mother Nature.  Ideal sap weather is freezing at night, warm during the day.

How many gallons of sap does it take to make 1 gallon of syrup?

 

This will depend on the sugar content of the sap, but generally speaking, it may take up to 40 gallons of sap to produce 1 gallon of pure maple syrup.

Did you know?

Did you know that the depending on where in maple season one is in that the color and flavor will change?  Typically, you may see light colored syrup at the beginning of the season and it turns darker with a more robust maple flavor as the season progresses.

Does it make a difference using wood vs Fuel Oil to boil?

 

This depends on your tastes buds, but we have not been able to taste any difference. It is still the sweet taste of maple syrup.

How deep do I drill a hole for tapping?

 

You will want to drill approximately 1.5 to 2 inches and slant the drill slightly so that the hole is slightly downward.
